Matrimony

Matrimony is a sacred bond instated by God to espouse a husband and wife. From the very first book of the Bible, Genesis, we see that a man is called to leave his parents and will eventually come to find a woman whom he will become one flesh with. For the understanding of one flesh and the triune spiritual sanctification, read article Trinity, section “Man: Made in the Image of God, the Trinity”. As for this short essay, allow me to take you through passages of scripture that unravel the truth that God has handed to us in His Word.

We begin in Matthew. Jesus is relaying a discourse long taught since the ancient Father’s that a man will leave his mother and father, find a wife and they will become one flesh. What these two have bound on earth binds in heaven (Matthew 6:9-14). God holds with such edification the fruition of marriage. We know this because what God has joined no man shall separate (Mark 10:7-12). To understand marriage better, read in article Divorce and Remarriage? what God says about the sanctity of marriage and the repercussion for breaking this sacramental bond between man and wife.

We, as Christians, must understand the way of living this commitment of truth in marriage; it is God’s. Ephesians 5:22-32 informs us that the union of man and wife is the image of Christ and the Church. To better understand this, again please read the article Trinity, sections “Man: Made in the Image of God, the Trinity”. Nowhere else in all of God’s creation is the Trinity mirrored as it is in the sanctity of marriage, conjugation and conception, and family. To understand how the aspect of family mirrors God, please read article Conception, Not Contraception. Marriage is so honorable that St. Paul declares it should be allowed to be honored among all in Hebrews 13:4. To understand where marriage stands within the vocation of priesthood and the clergy, please read article Celibacy.

Understand, marriage is a Sacrament. Marriage is a beautiful selfless act, in which a person joins their goals and operations of life with another being in mutual love and devotion.

Your’s,

Drew Castel
